Kingtom, a community in the Western part of Freetown reflects both the challenges and resilience found in many urban areas of Sierra Leone.
Living Conditions
Living conditions in Kingtom are difficult for many residents. The area is known for its proximity to the Kingtom dumpsite, where families often rely on collecting and selling recyclable waste to survive. Poverty is widespread, and many people live in overcrowded, makeshift homes built from metal sheets with limited protection from weather and health hazards. Access to clean water, sanitation, and electricity is often inadequate, and diseases can spread easily due to poor environmental conditions.
Despite these hardships, the community shows strong resilience, with families supporting one another and finding ways to earn income in challenging circumstances.
Soccer and Playing Conditions
Football (soccer) is the most popular sport in Sierra Leone, especially in urban communities like Kingtom.
However, facilities in Kingtom are very limited. Children and young people typically play on open dirt fields, streets, or improvised spaces rather than organized pitches. Equipment is often basic or shared, and organized leagues or structured training opportunities can be scarce.
Even with these limitations, soccer plays an important role in daily life—bringing youth together, providing an outlet for talent, and offering hope for opportunities beyond their environment.
Summary
Overall, life in Kingtom is marked by economic hardship and limited infrastructure, but also by strong community spirit. Soccer remains a powerful and accessible activity for youth, even in the absence of proper facilities, helping foster unity and ambition.
This class introduces toddlers to soccer through fun, movement-based play that supports physical, cognitive, and social development. Children will explore introductory soccer skills such as speed, balance/agility, shooting and passing/receiving the ball through short engaging activities designed for early learners. All our certified coaches use songs, colors, numbers, and simple problem-solving games to strengthen cognitive skills such as listening, memory, following directions, and cause-and-effect understanding. Classes also encourage turn-taking, body awareness, confidence, and positive interaction with peers. Parent or caregiver participation is welcomed to support learning and comfort.
